Rethinking Education

As I watch my little boy, Daniel, grow, I often wonder what education will look like for him.

While it is not an indicator of anything, my son’s doctors have said he is often ahead in his development, but I had not realized education for him began the moment he was out of the womb. My mom said early on Daniel is a “very observant” baby. He was learning how to do a lot on his own without me forcing him to do something.

Since around 2 to 3 months Daniel became a more energetic baby and would play to the point of exhaustion. He still does that. While he plays, we encourage him to be creative. Sometimes, you just need to put one or two toys in front of him at a time, and he will find a way to play.

So why do kids lose their creativity when they start school? I definitely will start by blaming the modern education system (Horace Mann created schools that stifle diversity of thought and creativity), so here is the solution: Create schools and education programs that are child-led instead of having students prepare constantly for tests. Learning should be enjoyable.
